Former
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has emerged as a surprise contender to replace
Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Reports from
Italy today (Corriere
dello Sport) say Conte could be reunited with outgoing Juventusgeneral
manager Giuseppe Moratta at Old Trafford. Mourinho has stated this week that he
doesn't expect to be sacked but the pressure is mounting on the
Portugese after United's defeat to West Ham last weekend. Tonight, United
are at home to Valencia in the Champions League, looking to build on their
opening night win over Young Boys.
Moratta will
start his new role at Old Trafford later this month having been brought in to
take some of the pressure off Ed Woodward. Given his relationship with Conte,
who left Stamford Bridge during the summer to be replaced by former Napoli boss
Maurizio Sarri. During his time at Juventus, Moratta was credited with raising
the club's global profile and helping to orchestrate the summer signing of
Cristiano Ronaldo. Conte guided Juve to three Serie A titles working alongside
Moratta.
In recent
weeks, Zinedine Zidane has emerged as the favourite to replace Mourinho should
he leave the club but Conte's pedigree marks him out as another strong
candidate. Zidane has been without a job since surprisingly walking away from
Real Madrid just days after they beat Liverpool in the Champions League Final.
United are way off the pace in the Premier League with the likes of Manchester
City, Liverpool and Chelsea setting the early pace.
A simmering row between Mourinho
and French international Paul Pogba has not helped matters.
