The Red Devils are facing a potential
crisis over the number of players who have expiring contracts.
Among them are Anthony
Martial, Luke Shaw and De Gea - as well as his compatriots Mata and Herrera.
The ex-Atletico Madrid star
has been United’s best player over the last five years - winning four Player of
the Year awards at the club.
There have been problems
during the negotiations with the Spanish keeper, with concerns over the future
of the club.
De Gea wants to be battling for the
highest prizes in football but United’s early season form has left him
worrying.
The current situation with
Jose Mourinho has also given him cause to be concerned - with The Special One
alienating a number of players in the dressing room.
De Gea’s next contract is
likely to be his last ‘big’ deal, with him turning 28 in November.
And the futures of compatriots Mata and
Herrera are reported to have a big say over his future too, according to ESPN.
The two Spaniards are in the final year
of their contracts but there are plans afoot to keep both at the club longer,
despite their peripheral roles in the first-team.
Paris
St-Germain are monitoring the situation as they search for a
successor to Gianluigi Buffon, with Alphonse Areola set to leave at the end of
the season.
Meanwhile, Paul Scholes believes De Gea
has not been at his best recently.
"The reason we finished
second last year was because of the goalkeeper," Paul Scholes
said.
"Good goalkeepers are
not easy to find. De Gea's not been quite as good this season, not saving them
like he did all last year."
